SURE is a coaching methodology that simply introduces some structure to the subjective demands of a coaching relationship, enabling the client to enjoy a relationship that meets individual needs whilst still delivering measurable results.

SURE is a four part model that guides the coach and client through the components of a great, productive coaching relationship.

S
et Context

This happens at the start of the relationship, or at the outset of any specific courses of action such as the resolution of problems. At this stage, the framework and rules are established and the client states the type, format and frequency of feedback required.

U
nderstand Situation

At this stage, the client states any problems or outstanding issues and also describes the desired outcomes or ideal situation. The aim of the coach at this stage is only to gain understanding of the environment around the coaching relationship. The coach does not intervene at this point.

R
esolve Issues

Before moving to desired goals and outcomes, any outstanding issues and problems must first be resolved and moved into the past. If outstanding problems are ignored, they can often resurface to sabotage any attempts the client makes to get better results in the future.

E
stablish Action

With the framework and feedback agreed, the context and environment understood and all relevant problems moved aside, the coach and client can now concentrate on the future. Desired outcomes and goals can now be transformed into behaviour and action, with any necessary tracking and feedback built in at this stage. The goal of the coach is to help the client generate so much motivation and self belief that feedback and tracking of progress is usually unnecessary. With motivation established, the coach just needs to get out of the way.
