Organisational Synergy |
Synergy is comfortable, difference makes us grow
Organisations - maybe even one you know - are in search of synergy. They look for opportunities or partners that are complementary and who "add value" to their core business. What often happens is that people fall into the comfortable space of working with people who are like them, instead of those who are different.
Do you know how lenses are made? A convex optical lens is the space where two spheres meet.

This type of lens converges light to a focal point. Where the spheres overlap, a lens is created which converges light down to a single point. The lens has been created from existing material in the two spheres, so is made from what they have in common.
A concave lens is the space where two spheres differ. It is created in the space between them and is made from new material which does not already exist in either sphere.

This type of lens diverges light. The space between the spheres is a lens that diverges light rays, spreading them further apart.
The convex alignment of organisations is comfortable - it encourages synergy, compliance and harmony.
The concave alignment of organisations is stretching - it creates difference, new growth and change.
We find comfort and support in people who are the same as us. We learn and grow with people who are different.
Which do you want?
Which feels nice?
Which guarantees the long term survival of your business?
Sometimes, uncomfortable choices are the best ones because they force you to take action, to grow, to move into new areas.
Growth means survival.
